It’s gonna rock!!!
If you’re not seeing the fat-loss results from your diet and workouts, think of sleeping! Find out how more quality sleep can help you succeed.
As you begin scrambling for the latest and most scientific information relating to stripping off those last few layers of body fat that seem to cling to you for dear life, you’re likely coming across a wide range of content concerning the best foods for belly-fat loss.
Maybe you’re also finding the best exercises to help boost the metabolism, the best workout designs that promise to add more muscle definition, and the best times to be eating if you hope to maximize the amount of fat you burn throughout the day.
There’s no question about it, what you eat and how you exercise are two significant contributors to the overall success rate you see. But after that, it’s important to not overlook some of the other contributing factors that can sway the type of progress you experience.
Make no mistake, achieving maximum fat loss and getting that “ripped” look that you see on the cover of your favorite health and fitness magazine is a 24/7 endeavour. If you aren’t on top of the game at all times, there is a large chance you’ll falter.
One specific component that very often gets overlooked is that of sleep. No one ever thinks of sleep being a factor in success since, after all, you are barely conscious while you sleep. How much damage could you really do to your progress while you are sleeping?
The answer is that it’s not what you do while you’re sleeping per se, it’s the quality and quantity of sleep you get. Let’s dig a bit further so you can see the profound connection sleep has with your weight loss.
INCREASED DAYTIME CORTISOL LEVELS
One of the first major problems that is associated with a lack of sleep is an increased daytime cortisol level. As you may have already known, cortisol is a hormone that is released within the body that works to break down body tissues. In times of stress, you will find cortisol levels very high since the body is getting ready for the fight or flight response mechanism.
Dieting itself puts the body in a stressed state since it is taking in fewer calories than it would ideally like to function, therefore you’re already at risk for such problems as muscle mass loss (which occurs when high cortisol levels begin breaking down the body’s tissues).
In one study put on by the Laboratory of Physiology in Belgium, researchers noted that those who were shorting themselves of sleep noticed higher afternoon and early evening cortisol levels than those who were not.
IMPAIRED GLUCOSE CONTROL
Have you ever found that after a late night out or a night of simply tossing and turning where sleep was hard to come by, the next day you were craving carbohydrates like a pregnant woman a few days before delivery?
One study conducted in Chicago noted that ongoing sleep deprivation is responsible for a number of changes in the hormonal release and metabolism of humans, especially increased hunger and appetite.
Often in very fatigued states the body senses this fatigue and perceives a low supply of energy as a result, kick-starting internal drives to eat (hunger).
In addition to this, the researchers also pointed out that sleep restriction can decrease glucose and insulin sensitivity, two of the most critical factors that are involved in the development or prevention of diabetes as well as regulating the satiety you feel after a meal is eaten.
While you may think staying up for that extra hour to catch your favorite TV isn’t really all that detrimental, if the truth is told it could be dramatically increasing the chances that you develop diabetes.
INCREASED VISCERAL ADIPOSE TISSUE
For most people on a fat loss diet, the visceral fat is the fat that’s most important to lose because it’s the type that will set you up for the greatest overall health threats.
While you may see subcutaneous fat gains easier (as this is the fat directly under the skin), a high level of fat surrounding the organs is really going to be problematic and could eventually be life threatening.
Researchers from the John Carroll University used a continuous dark versus continuous light exposure test to assess the impacts on a group of animals. They wanted to measure melatonin levels, the metabolic parameters, the circadian rhythm activity patterns, as well as any behavior changes that took place when animals were either placed in a standard condition with 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness, 24 hours of darkness, or 24 hours of continuous light.
After the study was completed the researchers noticed that the 24 hour light animals demonstrated a significantly greater visceral adipose tissue than the other two groups who did have darkness hours as well as those who were always exposed to light noted a lower level of overall activity and started to become extremely irritable and easily excited.
The body naturally wants to maintain its normal circadian rhythm with proper light and dark periods for wakefulness and sleep, and when these are altered, negative events take place with regards to body fatness and overall health.
In another study performed in the Czech Republic and published in Physiological Research, researchers found that optimal body weight was strongly associated with test subjects who maintained seven hours of sleep each night, making that the guideline that you should try and shoot for.
While some rare individuals may find they feel fine on much lower levels of sleep (5-6 hours) and others may find they need a great deal more (9+ hours per night), for most adults living a regular lifestyle with added training, 7-8 hours of sleep is optimal.
Generally the more intense and frequent your training sessions are, the more sleep you may require in order to recover properly. In these situations if 8-9 hours is not manageable, short afternoon naps can sometimes do the trick.
SLEEP AND EXERCISE PERFORMANCE
Finally, you must not overlook the connection between the amount of sleep you get and your overall exercise performance. When you are short on sleep, it’s typical to find yourself struggling to maintain the usual level of exercise that you normally would tolerate quite well.
In addition to this, since sleep is the primary time the body recovers from exercise, it’s also when you will be rebuilding your torn muscle tissues. Without this recovery time, you’re going to go into your next exercise session at a disadvantage.
One of the key recommendations for combating over training syndrome, which will quickly take you away from your workouts and limit further fat loss, is getting quality sleep. Failing to do so could mean you having to take time away from your program, which will without question of a doubt, slow you down.
So make sure you’re getting your 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Not only are you going to feel better, think clearer, and be much stronger when it comes to battling those food cravings that are so common with fat loss diets, but you’ll also really be helping promote better long-term health as well.

There is a serious problem facing 95% percent of people in western civilization. If you don’t fix this problem you will most certainly struggle to achieve the look you want. You could have the best program for building abs (clearly I am talking about Diamond Guru Fitness), with the best nutritional information, yet I guarantee you haven’t considered the most important factor in determining whether or not you will lose belly fat. Did you know that without paying proper
attention to your “gut”, you are potentially exposing yourself to toxins which could lead to a dangerous internal imbalance? By “gut” I mean your gut flora, which is also referred to your gut microbiota. These micro-organisms live by the hundreds of trillions in your digestive tract
and they have an extremely important function. The Role of Gut Flora. The human body contains 10 times as many microbes as it does actual human cells, and we have evolved alongside the bacteria in our bodies to forge a strictly symbiotic relationship. There are two types of bacteria, known as probiotic (supporting life) and pathogenic. These bacteria perform metabolic activities which resemble that of one of your other main organs; however, their role and function has largely been ignored in mainstream nutrition until recently. The good, or probiotic bacteria, perform critical functions such as training your immune system and stimulating cell growth, while also defending against disease by preventing the growth and proliferation of harmful pathogenic microorganisms. Without the proper balance of gut flora you are likely storing fat improperly. You are also at risk of inflammation which is a precursor to obesity. You see, the food you eat begins fermentation in your digestive tract. When undigested food ferments, the flora (if it is the good kind) turns this undigested food into useful energy and nutrients. This also enables your body to absorb iron (critical for women), magnesium and calcium, as well as playing an important role in your ability to correctly use vitamin B and vitamin K. Equally important is that this flora plays a role in metabolizing xenobiotics. Gut Flora and Xenobiotics. Xenobiotics are potentially harmful chemicals such as antibiotics, drugs, and environmental toxins which can be introduced to your body. Dietary intake will ultimately determine the balance of good bacteria in your intestines, and balancing your good bacteria is of course an important starting point for achieving a healthy and flat belly. The problem with dieting is that you can find yourself suffering from things like fatigue, rebounds (gaining back lost weight), cravings similar to those of an addict, and even metabolic damage. If you have stubborn belly fat, eat a lot of processed foods, or perhaps even struggle with sugar addiction, balancing your gut flora will put you on a path to change. What’s amazing is that this can happen quite quickly. You can start this process by simply adding a good probiotic supplement. The Benefits of Probiotic Supplements As we discussed above, probiotic bacteria are essential to human health due to the roles that they play within the body. These roles cover everything from immune function to hormone production and the development of new cells and tissues. Anything that will support the population of these “friendly” bacteria is likely to prove beneficial to our overall health and well-being. One way of supporting the bacteria population in your gut is to incorporate probiotic supplements. Probiotic supplements such as lactobacillus and bifidobacterium can provide a number of different health benefits, including a reduction in inflammation and protection against infectious diseases. A 2008 study published in the International Journal of Food Microbiology set out to assess the interaction of probiotic lactobacillus and bifidobacterium strains with human intestinal epithelial cells. Among the effects observed, these bacterial strains appeared to compete against what are known as enteropathogens such as salmonella and E. coli. Simply put, these friendly bacteria protect against such infectious pathogens, while also protecting the gut from acute inflammation. The study concluded with the following statement: “Both strains showed the potential to protect enterocytes from an acute inflammatory response. These probiotic strains are potential candidates for the development of new functional foods helpful in counteracting enteropathogen infections.” Another study, this time published in Nature in 2011 demonstrated that bifidobacteria can protect from enteropathogenic infection through production of acetate. What is interesting about this particular study is that it provides us with a more extensive understanding of just how bifidobacteria works within the body. Bifidobacteria was shown to directly protect against E. coli by preventing the toxin from being translocated from the gut lumen to the bloodstream, due in part to the production of acetate. The researchers concluded, “[we] propose that acetate produced by protective bifidobacteria improves intestinal defence mediated by epithelial cells and thereby protects the host against lethal infection.” Now this is all well and good but very few of us find ourselves at risk of E. coli infection on a regular basis, so what are some of the benefits of probiotic supplements that are more directly relevant to our daily lives? Gut Health and Chronic Fatigue Chronic fatigue syndrome is a condition that appears to be quite prevalent in our modern age. If you have ever experienced chronic fatigue syndrome or you know someone who suffers from it then you are probably well aware of just how much a hindrance it can be to one’s quality of life. Although the direct causes of chronic fatigue syndrome are uncertain, there have been some studies showing that patients suffering from CFS have lower levels of bifidobacteria, as well as other undesirable changes to their gut flora. People suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome may potentially be suffering from the malabsorption of certain nutrients. There also appears to be some effect on the immune system due to patients often reporting allergies. The good news is that a 2002 study showed lactic acid bacteria to be of therapeutic value in the context of chronic fatigue syndrome.

Are you ready to shake up your workout? Do you wish you could burn more calories without spending more time at the gym? Consider aerobic interval training. Once the domain of elite athletes, interval training has become a powerful tool for the average exerciser, too.
What is interval training?
It’s not as complicated as you might think. Interval training is simply alternating bursts of intense activity with intervals of lighter activity.
What can interval training do for you?
Whether you’re a novice exerciser or you’ve been exercising for years, interval training can help you jazz up your workout routine. Consider the benefits:
- You’ll burn more calories. The more vigorously you exercise, the more calories you’ll burn — even if you increase intensity for just a few minutes at a time.
- You’ll improve your aerobic capacity. As your cardiovascular fitness improves, you’ll be able to exercise longer or with more intensity. Imagine finishing your 60-minute walk in 45 minutes — or the additional calories you’ll burn by keeping up the pace for the full 60 minutes.
- You’ll keep boredom at bay. Turning up your intensity in short intervals can add variety to your exercise routine.
- You don’t need special equipment. You can simply modify your current routine.
Are the principles of interval training the same for everyone?
Yes — but you can take interval training to many levels. If you simply want to vary your exercise routine, you can determine the length and speed of each high-intensity interval based on how you feel that day.
After warming up, you might increase the intensity for 30 seconds and then resume your normal pace. The next burst of more intense activity may last two to three minutes. How much you pick up the pace, how often and for how long is up to you.
If you’re working toward a specific fitness goal, you may want to take a more scientific approach. A personal trainer or other expert can help you time the intensity and duration of your intervals — which may include movement patterns similar to those you’ll use during your sport or activity — based on your target heart rate, the ability of your heart and lungs to deliver oxygen to your muscles (peak oxygen intake), and other factors.
Does interval training have risks?
Interval training isn’t appropriate for everyone. If you have a chronic health condition or haven’t been exercising regularly, consult your doctor before trying any type of interval training. Recent studies suggest, however, that interval training can be used safely for short periods even in individuals with heart disease.
Also keep the risk of overuse injury in mind. If you rush into a strenuous workout before your body is ready, you may injure your muscles, tendons or bones. Instead, start slowly. Try doing just one or two higher intensity intervals during each workout at first. If you think you’re overdoing it, slow down. As your stamina improves, challenge yourself to vary the pace. You may be surprised by the results.
If you’d like to try this type of exercise, call me, Diamond, at 954-658-0479 for a Personal Training session or come out to a small group personal training class! For more information and to get started…call or email to email@example.com

I hope you rang in the New Year with a bang. I know I did 🙂
I LOVE this time of year. For me, it’s a time of reflection and growth. Reviewing, mentally, 2015 and thinking about what goals I achieved and those I did not. Thinking about why some things were easy and went better than expected and why other things were difficult or didn’t happen at all.
Whatever the case, it doesn’t matter. The point is that you learn something from the good and the bad. Because life is about experiences. Learning from those experiences. And then moving on to create even better experiences.
Today is a new day, a new year, a new start. Whatever crappy things happened yesterday or last year or even the last decade…check ‘em at the door.
It’s time to start fresh. In 2016, your new body is Just waiting for you!
If you read my emails, then obviously you care about your health and fitness, good for you.
So, today I want to give you a simple, yet powerful tip someone taught me many moons ago. If you’re an self-reflecting, inward-looking kind of person, this will help you with your fitness (and all aspects of your life, really). I know it’s helped me tremendously:
It’s, “The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting different results.”
There is so much power in that one short sentence. But it really wakes you up, doesn’t it?
Anyway the point is, if New Year’s resolutions haven’t worked for you in the past (when it comes to your weight and fitness goals), take a minute now to reflect on what is you’ve done in the past to achieve those goals.
Whatever that is, it doesn’t matter anymore. Time to move forward.
Time to kick those past failures right in the ass and do something DIFFERENT.
The Diamond Guru Fitness Exercise and Nutrition program might be just the change you need to whip your body into shape — AND change your mindset. Each workout is meticulously designed to turn on your “afterburn.”, which means your body will continue to burn calories up to 48 hours AFTER your workout is over. Each nutritious and delicious recipe is designed to keep you happy and sated all while getting you healthy and to your ultimate goal weight and Keep It Off For Good!
(Most people are only focused on the calories burned during their workout and this is the BIGGEST mistake of all!)
The catch-22 is that the “afterburn” only kicks in when you do specific kinds of exercises performed a specific way…and it’s NOT what they teach you in classes at the gym. I’ll show you exactly how to turn on your afterburn so you can skyrocket your metabolism and burn fat lightening fast — and don’t worry, my workouts are super simple to follow, promise 🙂
So scoot your booty on over to my website and join me for weekly workouts at my studio in Fort Lauderdale (Tues, Thurs @7pm Sat. @11am) or your own Personalized exercise and Nutrition Guru experience online where I’m with you 6 days a week and every step of the way! Good morning Diamond Guru Fitness Enthusiasts,
The information here will be simultaneously straightforward and empowering. I won’t be selling you on some new gizmo to reverse aging and add glow to your skin. Instead, I want to inspire you to get back to living naturally. The information I want to share with you today is ingrained into the genius of nature’s design – it’s timeless.
First for the stuff most of us don’t want to hear: the truth. If we want to look younger again or stay youthful the answer is not injections, stimulants, or designer cosmetics. None of these will actually make us look or feel younger, because underneath all of it we’re still burning out. If our skin is aging, its because our insides are weakening. What we have to do is change ourselves: our thoughts, words and actions.
If you can handle that and are still with me, then let’s get beautiful again. Did you know you could not only stop the aging process, but also reverse it? By healing our bodies from within we can heal our faces. Truthfully, with the right lifestyle we can heal our organs, blood and cells and in result, watch fine lines, blemishes, and wrinkles disappear. Traditional wisdom has known this for thousands of years – the healers of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) especially.
Before we can really change our ways, we have to open our minds to new thoughts. For some, the idea of healing with food sounds outrageous; if this is you, then I can only suggest you research and experiment for yourself.
One dogma I want to break down here is the idea of hereditary destiny. What are typically considered “hereditary” skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and cellulite are also lifestyle-inflicted that can be stopped in the same way we can stop acne. The idea of “shutting off” genetic weakness is a study now referred to as Epigenetics. I suggest the book “The Genie in Your Genes” for further study. In short, through lifestyle – thoughts, movement, sleep and diet – we can keep our genetic weaknesses dormant.
Though the topic of Epigenetics is too broad to discuss fully in one article, I felt it necessary to mention. Otherwise, the idea of food having an actual impact on your skin may not seem realistic to you. In the rest of this article I am going to stick to the topic of foods for beauty. I want to share with you a few of the most powerful foods and lifestyle tips for deactivating our skin problems and invigorating our youth.
Foods For Perfect Skin
The information here is intended to empower you to take control of your genetic destiny – it is not for the faint of heart or people with a victim mentality. Though most of us have been convinced by the media to be consumers, rather than learn to grow, cook and eat nourishing real food, we can take our power back. One of the simplest ways to do so is choosing what we put in our mouths and take charge of our health.
In order to do so, we have to get over our own laziness and stop living for comfort – comfortable houses, comfortable jobs and comfort foods. All these provide us only a glimmer of comfort; in fact, it’s not real comfort but a false sense of security. Our society has become based on instant gratification at the cost of our health, inner fulfillment and freedom.
If we want to live to be beautiful for a lifetime we have to relearn the basics, eating real food. However, most of us want our food prepackaged and ready to eat in an instant. It’s surprising how many people are unhealthy and suffer from poor skin because they simply don’t know how to cook! We don’t even know how to use nature’s food – fruits, vegetables, animal products and so on – nature’s beauty food.
Hopefully with the help of this article, those days of consumerism dependency can come to an end. Though this article is specific to foods for skin, you’ll see that your whole life will begin to change. Food can transform your skin and life. Each one of the foods listed below could have a book written about them (and some do). For the sake of brevity I will share just a few of the most powerful beauty foods and their purposes.
1. Bitter Greens
Foods such as arugula, dandelion, and nettle are common liver cleansers. The “bitter” taste is a very special taste, as it stimulates the vagus nerve, which tells the liver to produce new fresh bile. This is a great help for the liver to cleanse out toxic bile and harmful bacteria. When the liver is clean, the skin glows. These foods also stimulate digestion, which is useful as preventative measures. When we do not digest food well it leads to bacterial imbalances, yeast infections, constipation and toxicity, which eventually shows on the skin. Stinging nettle is a common weed you can find for free. It’s one of the highest sources of silicon, which is greatly needed for collagen production. Without enough silica, skin sags and wrinkles. Silica needs strong stomach acid to break down. Luckily this common weed packs enough bitterness to stimulate the secretion of HCL (stomach acid) to help break down the silica. Nature has everything figured out!
2. Young Grasses
Wheat, alfalfa, and barley are grasses that happen to be some of the greatest sources of chlorophyll. Referred to as liquid sunshine, chlorophyll cleanses the blood and detoxifies the liver too. These young grasses are incredible detoxifiers and also contain tons of amino acids – building blocks for skin tissues. You can get these grasses fresh and they are best juiced as all the nutrients are locked away in the cellulose, which humans cannot digest. You can also find them in raw, powdered form. My favorite is Vitality SuperGreens by Body Ecology. This greens powder is fermented, which unlocks the nutrients and makes them easier to digest. It also has added nutrients, probiotics and glutamine, all which are fantastic for regenerating the skin.
Schisandra, ginger, turmeric, and burdock are all very potent herbs that have endless skin-supporting properties. One of the main functions of these medicinal plants is that they cleanse the liver. The skin is the “outer liver.” If you want great skin, keep your liver clean and these herbs do just that. Turmeric, for example, is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory close to that of cortisone. That’s right, toss your acne medications and start juicing this yellow herb instead! It rejuvenates skin tissues, fights acne and boils, and adds color and lusciousness to the skin. Not to mention, turmeric is a great ingredient for savory soups and sweet drinks. Ginger has many of the same properties. Burdock is especially great for cleaning the blood, which is very important for clear skin and preventing more serious skin ailments.
4. Sea Vegetables
If you aren’t consuming sea veggies daily then you’re missing out on some major health and beauty resources! The reason sea vegetables (seaweed) are so nourishing for the skin is because of their mineral content. They are some of the most mineral-dense foods left on the planet. Because they come from the ocean, they have many more mineral deposits than most of our overly farmed soils. The mineral makeup in seaweed is identical to that of our own blood. They are higher in calcium than dairy – especially the seaweed Alaria. Arame is especially high in iodine, which is crucial for over a million different functions in the body. One benefit of iodine is the impact it has on our endocrine system. It nourishes the adrenals and thyroid; two very important glands that play a role in skin health. When these two glands are healthy they give us soft, wrinkle free skin that glows. Not to mention these foods are anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal, all which keep our skin safe from nasty bacterial, fungus and yeast infections.
5. Raw Fats
Egg yolks and avocado are two sources of raw fat that are especially great for skin. That’s because they are rich in sulfur, folate and B vitamins – basically all the most important stuff for good skin. Raw fat is very detoxifying. Unlike rancid, overly cooked fats, these absorb toxins in the body and, like lubricant, remove them from the digestive tract. They also help deliver the good stuff (vitamins, minerals and other nutrients) to the cells. Forget an apple a day – though green apples are great skin foods too – I say an avocado a day keeps the doctor away.
6. Probiotic Foods
If you want to learn all about fermented or probiotic foods, keep reading. In short, probiotic foods are some of the most powerful foods for changing our health and body. They are especially great for skin health. Probiotics are the protectors of our immunity; they fight off bad bugs and keep our bodies clean. They are also little alchemists. They can take silica and turn it into other minerals we might be deficient in, which is fantastic, because it’s hard to get minerals these days and they are very necessary for beautiful skin. Electrolytes are especially important for pore-less skin. One of my favorite probiotic foods for glowing skin is coconut kefir. It’s loaded with electrolytes and reduces pores overnight. I advise probiotic foods verses store-bought pills or powders. Probiotics are living organisms and who knows what happens to them in those capsules all that time. Making your own ensures you have a thriving, living final product.
Grapefruit, oranges, limes and lemons are the skin’s best friends. These sweet and sour fruits are loaded with vitamin C (precursors to building collagen) and bioflavonoids. Citrus fruits contain 58 known anti-cancer compounds and prevail over any other food in that area. They contain necessary electrolytes, alkalize the body, dissolve uric acid and even have been shown to dissolve kidney stones. They are great diuretics, helping you eliminate toxic residue through the urine more efficiently. Anything that keeps the liver, kidneys, and digestive tract clean is going to result in great skin. Citrus fruits hit all of these major areas of the body. It is said that a cup of raw lemon juice a day for 3 months can completely regenerate a toxic liver. Though I am not suggesting this is fact, given the medicinal properties of lemon juice, I’d say it’s at least worth a shot. If anything, by consuming fresh citrus fruits daily, you will benefit with some pretty flawless skin. All citrus fruits are great for the liver.
8. Sulfur Foods
Common sulfuric foods are onions and garlic. In addition to these are pine needles, radishes, durian, pine nuts, and aloe vera. Along with some I already mentioned; eggs, arugula, and wild grasses. Sulfur foods are basically the smelly bitter foods no one likes. However, sulfur is in all living things and aids the proper formation of proteins (skin tissue, hormones and antibodies). It’s especially needed for the formation of collagen, which makes up over a quarter of the protein in our body. That means, if you want gorgeous, wrinkle-free, elastic skin for a lifetime, you would be wise to make these foods your friends.
9. Bone Broth
This food is so powerfully healing that it’s called one of The Original Superfoods. What makes bone broth great for the skin is that it contains everything the skin needs; amino acids, glutamine, sulfurs, collagen, hyaluronic acid, glucosamine, and over 70 trace minerals. Because it’s in liquid form, it’s incredibly easy to digest, making it more bioavailable than almost any beauty product you will find on a shelf.
There you have it, some of nature’s most powerful beauty products. Did you notice they were all foods? This might not have been the quick fix you were looking for; however, I can tell you it’s the most effective and empowering fix there is, and it truly works. Give some of these foods a shot. You don’t need a complete life overhaul, go easy on yourself and notice the difference. Once you do, you won’t turn back. There is nothing that feels quite as good as radiant health and true beauty.
